WHAT IS AN IMPLANT
Implant are tiny pins made of especially compatible pure titanium which are inserted into the bone of the jaw. The dentist can attachcrowns, bridges or removable dentures to these artificial roots. In approximately three to six months, the bone growstightly around the surface of the implant and grips it firmly in the jaw.

The following are critical when selecting the implant
The amont of bone available
the fimness of the bone, and
the time at which the implant is inserted.

The amount of bone available
The dentist checks that adequate bone is available for inserting the implant.
If too little bone is available for an implant, in many cases it can be built up surgically.

The firmness of the bone
The dentist decides on a threaded or nonthreaded implant depending on how the firm the bone is.

  • Difficult to decide depth of placement
  • Not possible to surgically modify the soft tissue aesthetics

We had a case of a failed endodontically treated tooth the lower left bicuspid which had fractured and had a broken endo post inside, which was non retievable A one piece implant was decided to be placed as it has a deeper thread design more suiatable for placement in extraction sockets and increased primary stability of the implant. Also due to larger bone to implant contact the possibility of a predictable immediate loading crown also exists if performed.

Immediately after extraction a 4.5 dia one piece implant was placed and a placement torque of around 45 N cm was achieved. A bone level impression of the abutment head was taken with a castable nylon transfer coping and sent to the lab The same day we had the lab fabricate a porcelain crown on the implant which was lueted conventionally and kept out of definative occlusal contacts scheme

Patient got her form function and aesthetics back on the same day and was quite pleased about it.
